Hollywood Guilds Issue Blistering Joint Statement Over Emmy 2026 Telecast Cuts

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, three of Hollywood’s most powerful guilds—the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the Writers Guild of America (WGA), and SAG-AFTRA—have launched a fierce joint protest against the Television Academy’s decision to cut five key categories from the main Emmy Awards 2026 live telecast. The ceremony is scheduled to air on NBC on September 15, 2026.

In a scathing joint statement, the three Hollywood guilds declared:

“The purpose of the Emmy Awards is to celebrate television’s finest work and the artists central to bringing these stories to life. Diminishing these categories by removing them from the live broadcast devalues the contributions of the talented professionals the Academy is sworn to honor. An awards show whose mission is to recognize excellence should not diminish the visibility of the very creators who give the Academy its purpose.”

The Television Academy had previously announced its intention to cut five categories from the main ceremony and relegate them to the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which take place a week earlier. The affected categories include Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie, Directing and Writing for a Limited Series or TV Movie, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

This is not the first time the Academy has targeted these categories. In 2023, in a bid to boost viewership and increase broadcast rights fees, the Academy attempted to remove the Variety Writing category from the live Fox telecast. The strategy aimed to replace lower-viewership segments with broader entertainment to attract a larger audience. However, the move was thwarted by a fierce backlash from the WGA and aggressive lobbying from late-night writers and hosts, forcing the Academy to back down and reinstate the category for the 2024 telecast.

Beyond moral pressure, the three guilds hold significant leverage over the Academy, including the potential revocation of hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fee discounts for clips used during the broadcast. These financial discounts are contingent upon a strict minimum number of major award categories being maintained in the live telecast.

The ratings success of the 2026 Emmy Awards is critical for the Television Academy, as its current broadcast package expires after this year’s event. The organization desperately needs a strong showing to secure a lucrative new multi-year television deal for its financial survival.
